alejandro's national context:
To think globally and act locally means, to want to make a change in the world, but to start small and then one day make a change in the world. For example, Forbes.com states "They focus on impacting the world in a positive way, even if it's just on a small scale." This illustrates how many people often think small to make a difference in the world. To summarize, there are people that think small in order to make a difference in the world.
The issue of body image is a main concern in the United States, but there are many organizations that support the idea of how the media is affecting many young peoples decision to change how they look. This can be best explained in the following quote, "The effect of media on women's body dissatisfaction, thin ideal internalization, and disordered eating appears to be stronger among young adults than children and adolescents. This may suggest that long-term exposure during childhood and adolescence lays the foundation for the negative effects of media during early adulthood." This implies that the type of media children are exposed to at a young age, will affect them in the long run.

The type of media children are exposed to can have a strong possibility that when they grow up, they will be dissatisfied with their body or how they look. The website nationaleatingdisorder.org states "On a typical day, 8 - 18-year-old are engaged with some form of media about 7.5 hours. Most of this time spent watching television, though children play video games more than an hour per day and are on their computers for more than an hour per day. Even media aimed at elementary school age children, such as animated cartoons and children videos, emphasize the importance of being attractive. Sexually objectified images of girls and women in advertisements are most likely to appear in men's magazines. Yet the second most common source of such images is the advertisements in teen magazines directed at young adolescent girls" This is interesting because there are windows that children and young adults view that say that you must be a certain way in order to be accepted in today's modern society.
The National Institute on the Media and the Family have done studies on body image, they concluded "...that at age thirteen 53% of American girls are "unhappy with their bodies" this grows to 78% by the time girls reach seventeen". This matters because there are many young people that are unhappy with their bodies. Although dissatisfaction with body image may seem of a concern to a small group of people, it should in fact concern anyone who cares about helping people with who do not like how their body looks like.
