deBate & controversy
There are different point of views on the perception of beauty. There is a male point of view, there is the point of view of the cosmetic companies, and the doctor’s point of view. From a male point of view they might say that they are under represented in the population of people who suffer from a negative body image because the issue of body image mainly focuses on women and young girls. Since the effects of a negative image are usually associated with girls, some guys feel as if they can’t be open because they aren’t always included. Other males might say that they don’t have a problem because they are scared to be judged by the society in which we live because males are always seen to be manly and not care. Males are bombarded with images of muscular men in ads, magazines, clothing stores, and in porn. According to the Alliance for Eating Disorder Awareness 2.4 to 3.6 million men suffer from an eating disorder. Men shouldn’t be shunned for wanting a “perfect body” that the media portrays.
The controversies for women and how they are portrayed in the media are that women are fine being thin while others disagree and that women should be encouraged to love the way they look without modifications. The Victoria’s Secret company uses tall thin model with perky breast to advertise their clothing and lingerie. This can pose a negative image for women and can cause low self-esteem to develop. On the other hand companies like Lane Bryant have targeted Victoria’s Secret and started a campaign with the slogan “I’m No Angel” to encourage full figured women to love their bodies. When companies decide to take action by encouraging people to accept their body there are controversies because some believe that they are encouraging people to be overweight. However, the truth is that they are just trying to help people boost their self-esteem.
